In considering a new car, we think we should gain some definite advantage having an automatic advance and retard for the ignition. We know Mr. Royce has given this matter some thought but lately in carrying out tests the possible advantages have been shown up.

In connection with the Packard Car, there we have an engine which has a very high compression and we find that we get distinctly less vibration from the engine if we work the ignition the way one would anticipate it would be worked by an automatic device.

On our own 40/50 chassis, if one always retards the ignition when picking up, the pulsations of the engine cannot be flet nearly as much. To get a soft engine picking up full throttle, we run with the low compression. We think that having an automatic advance and retard would give us the effectof a very low compression picking up and a more efficient engine at high speeds.
