x 543 ~602~ EFC/T2.2.22. X.294. DYNAMOS. X.543. STARTER MOTORS. Standardisation of the terms "advance" and "retard" as applied to the brushes or to the commutator of a dynamo or motor. On a contact breaker for ignition, "advancing" the lever mechanism naturally implies revolving this against the direction of rotation, but "advancing" the cam ( as, for instance, by a governor) implies revolving this in the direction of rotation. To avoid confusion, therefore, in applying these terms in connection with dynamos and motors, we adopt a like principle. "Advancing" any brush, or system of brushes, means revolving this brush or system of brushes contrary to the direction of rotation. On the other hand, "advancing" the commutator means moving this in the direction of rotation in relation to the armature. "Advance" always implies that some particular functioning takes place earlier in time, e.g. "advance" will cause a particular brush to come into contact with a particular commutator segment earlier in time. Thus, considering a single field winding third brush controlled dynamo, we have the following results :- Contd. | ||
