Re Steering Pivots F.3372.X.168. Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}/EMO/L14813.

Mr Day. I was very pleased to receive the report of the test of the second stub axle, and to hear that it was not the metal that was at fault, and can only conclude now that the U part being very much stronger the next weakest part is that which failed.

I shall be very pleased if Mr Day will make the necessary modification to improve somewhat the strength of the stub axle and lighten the joint until we again get the stub axle proper stronger than the joint.

I conclude that the 41 1/2 hours running on the test rig is a very severe test, and probably a good many of the steering levers broke during the test. There are therefore at the present moment three points to give attention to, viz, :-

The strengthening of the steering lever. (previously noted)
The lightening of the joint at the "U" section.
The strengthening of the stub at the root.

Please get this completed at the first possible moment, and see if we can without increasing the weight increase the time the parts will stand the reversal test. See sketch.

In the next report give me, the relative times of the various types, specially mentioning those which have
