To B.J. from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X4012 Hsl/LG5.11.28. X5770 With reference to your written note of the 2nd.inst. Na.{Mr Nadin} during his last visit to Derby tried the latest 20 HP. (12-G-4) which was prepared for R.{Sir Henry Royce} He had the impression that the car was very much better than any previous 20 HP. he had tried. We think he got this idea because it was a long time since they had tried a 20 HP. and they had got a very poor impression of its performance. The car he tried was exactly like the present standard except that it had smaller dia. wheels, which was equivalent to reducing the axle ratio by 5%. We have not yet run a 20 HP. car with the latest engine improvements, i.e., turbulent head and higher comp: ratio. We should say, that if it is required, there is no doubt we could increase the performance of the 20 HP. by 10%. We expect to have a 20 HP. car running with the improved engine in 2 to 3 weeks. It is doubtful whether we shall equal the Chrysler, the reason being that the Chrysler has a bit larger engine and a lighter complete car. With the improvements contemplated however we expect to be able to make quite a good show against a car like the Chrysler. If we go through with the experiments suggested by Mr R.{Sir Henry Royce} - such as fitting a S/C. to the 20 HP. we could then no doubt put up a much better performance than Chrysler.
