To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} C. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} C. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} x7060 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson}15/KW.13.6.34. The last item required on the silent tappets for the Phantom is the valve spring. As previously discussed verbally we are proposing to send 28-EX to France at the end of next week with a Rolls-Royce type standard camshaft, E.80070, inlet valves E.82458, exhaust Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1270. This combination will run up to 3400 r.p.m. without trouble with valve springs giving 85 lbs. seat load and 165 lbs. in the valve fully open position. We want some single valve springs to give these loads. Using the large carburetter we shall then have an engine which is satisfactory for the silent tappets, has a camshaft less susceptible to timing gear rattles and gives approximately the same power output as the present standard car. We are actually making the valve shown on Loc.3960, which we expect will push the speed at which the silent tappet will work above 3500 revs., but these could follow the car out after they have done a little test bed running.
