To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} X.4244 R8/M19.7.22. GOSHAWK CLUTCH. X.4244. Referring to section 8 of R2/M15.7.22., dealing with the above unit, we now send herewith drawing No. LeC.1607 - improvements in Goshawk clutch mechanism - in which we have shewn modifications that should reduce the cost, and also the pedal load required for declutching. We have stiffened up the levers in the clutch itself making the deflection less than half that obtaining previously, also considerably increased the stiffness of the operating shaft by now making its outside dia. 1" and thickness .125". To allow ample clearance for revolving parts on clutch and at the same time incorporation of the simplified withdrawing mechanism shewn on LeC.1489 it has been necessary to lower and move the rear the clutch operating shaft. This shaft is now located longitudinally by the right hand bush between the pinned on collar and outside lever. It is intended that the pinned on collar be fixed in position on the bench, the Woodruff keys being afterwards sweated in position to form a unit which can be easily assembled into position, the split taper pins used previously having given place to the keys. On the pedal shaft distance piece F.50037 has been eliminated altogether, and the length of pedal lever boss slightly decreased. This allows shortening of clutch shaft by .325". contd:- | ||
