R.{Sir Henry Royce} FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} C. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} XS460 DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}7/M23.1.31. JAPAN 3. - PETROL TANK, ETC. X5460 X5770. Derby consider that they can press the bosses in the petrol tank for carrying the various fittings, and so economise by simplifying the fittings. On these lines we have drawn out the proposed tank for Japan 3. While doing so we have taken the opportunity to increase the capacity as much as possible with the present frame, because of the larger engine. We think we can obtain approximately 16 gls. instead of 14 gls. With regard to the suspension it is suggested that the present system is very good, and we have merely simplified it by running the tube right across the tank, as has been recently proposed for Phantom 2. We send herewith prints of N. schs. 3191/96/97. shewing respectively the proposed tank, the resulting modifications to the two level device, and spare wheel carrier, and the central vent and K.{Mr Kilner} S. gauge. The original N. schemes are attached to BY's copy of this memo. It has also been suggested that the tank might be made by pressing in two halves and welding. We intend to investigate this in a short while. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
