20-EX DYNAMOMETER TESTS.

We give herewith results of test on the dynamometer the object of which was to determine the power lost in the carburetter air silencer.

It will be recalled that removing the air silencer completely resulted in an increase of 2mph. in maximum speed on Brooklands track. From the attached tests an increase of 9 BHP. at 84 mph. is obtained by removing the air silencer completely. If all the inner tubes were removed (which procedure is suggested for Continental P.2. cars) an increase of 7 BHP. is obtained at the same speed.

Further tests on the exhaust system were carried out. In these a straight through downtake pipe, a downtake pipe led into the front end of the port expansion box and a swan neck fish tail having 50% greater area than standard were tested. None of these appreciably affected the power output.
