VALVE FAILURE. Further to our telegrams and Daily Report, this car is now out of action with a piece broken out of the head of the S/SLV Exhaust valve of N° 4 cylinder. The broken piece had disappeared. The mileage covered by the valve was 6,447, and we have dispatched it to you for examination. We are obtaining three standard Bentley exhaust valves from Paris to replace the Silchrome exhaust valves in cylinders 4, 5, & 6. All the valve seatings in the head are in good condition including that of the broken valve. The other five exhaust valves also appear in good condition for the mileage. On withdrawing N° 4 piston, it was found to have seized badly almost all the way round. The rings and lands were distorted, and one side of the skirt broken right away. The head of the piston is marked all over by the broken valve, bulged in slightly and cracked. The con-rod is undamaged and the big end bearing in A.C.6.S. is in excellent condition. The mileage covered is 4,201. The cylinder is scored but not deeply, and some aluminium deposited on it. It is being cleaned up by hand so the new piston can be fitted when received. ---------------- Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux}/IMW.{Ivan M.
