Rolls Royce Ltd., D E R B Y. 13th April, 1939. Attention:- Mr. G.H. Grylls. Dear Sirs, We thank you for your letter of 6th April. The static radius of our 6.50/16 4-ply tyre in the new design under a load of 9 cwts. 42 lbs. and with an inflation pressure of 28 lbs. per square inch is 13.93". The load and inflation pressured used correspond to those specified by you in Skid Pan tests during last Summer. We know that at speeds of around 30 miles per hour the rolling radius is greater than the static radius by 1.3/4% which would give a figure for rolling radius for 30 miles per hour of 14.1". We regret that we have no exact knowledge of how rolling radius changes with increasing speeds, but when we have hitherto been requested by manufacturers for rolling radius data to guide them in designing speedometers we have quoted the static radius plus 1.3/4% to their entire satisfaction. Some weeks ago you sent us an order for 12 further tyres and tubes to be sent to Mr. Waller in France. Unfortunately, as we detailed to Mr. Hardy on the telephone the tubes were not embossed "Made in England" - those words had only been stamped on the tubes with indelible ink. The French Customs would not release the consignment nor would they permit us to split the consignment, having the tyres delivered to Mr. Waller and the tubes returned to us. We must therefore agree to the return of both tyres and tubes to Melksham and the subsequent despatch of tyres only to Mr. Waller. We will, of course, pass you the necessary credit note for the tubes. Kindly confirm that this arrangement has your approval. Yours faithfully, THE AVON INDIA RUBBER COMPANY LIMITED.
