'SS{S. Smith}' FRONT AXLE.

Herewith we send N.sch.2625 shewing the front axle with the centre portion dropped 1" more than the present standard.

We have shewn the side steering tube using either a damped pendulum lever, or the springs all at one end, but the axle shape is such that if it should be necessary to revert to the double springs which are now used, it can be done by slightly increasing the height of the ball.

The other modifications to this axle are in the pivot. The angle has been reduced so that the meeting point between the pivot centreline and the wheel centre-line on the road is 1.5 instead of 1.263 as now. This alteration can be got out of existing pivot forgings.

We have also indicated a method of making the upper roller bearing oil retaining, which requires a slight addition to the present pivot forging.
