Hydraulic Jacks - 28-EX. With reference to E.4/HP.8.4.35, and the trouble experienced with the above. We experienced a similar trouble a few days ago, but the addition of more fluid to the reservoir overcame this and the car was left jacked up for approx. 2 hours until required, the pressure being maintained. However, yesterday the system was re-tried, to find as pointed out in the above memo., that the car sank rapidly after being jacked up. We then dismantled the box to see if any foreign matter was fouling the release valve. The failure was apparently due to a very rough valve facing, and we immediately returned the complete unit to Smiths for rectification and report thereon. We have not so far experienced this trouble with the system on 5-B-IV which is now doing 10,000 miles. On one occasion we jacked the car up but could not release it, this was due to the release valve becoming jammed in the closed position; a fault in design which has since been rectified.
