SPARE WHEEL CARRIER. --------------------------------------- Referring to Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/Ev{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}2/M.27.2.26. the position as we tried to outline it in our previous memo was not that we were asking for West WitteringHenry Royce's home town to agree to the wheel being pushed 1" further out. We were trying to convey the following information:- 1. Coachbuilders, through Sales, are pressing for the spare wheel to be carried 1" further out, as mentioned. 2. The Experimental Dept, are very strong upon the point that:- a/- Their spare wheel carriers are fitted to the 27" dimension originally agreed to. b/- They are fitted on to chassis with the wide dashbords, and therefore the Experimental Dept. since they have completed their tests and are prepared to standardize this type of carrier as it stands, are not prepared to agree to the 1" movement outwards, as being in the first place necessary, or in the second place advisable, as it will considerably increase the stresses on the parts. Our object in writing was that West WitteringHenry Royce's home town should definitely satisfy themselves that the new figure was absolutely necessary. Agreeing to the coachbuilders' proposal as a modification does not get us out of our trouble, - it lands us in a further one, namely, a modified spare wheel carrier and an additional 10,000 miles test.
