Proposal for a breather and oil filler to prevent engine fumes from getting into closed bodies.

X.4220 RE "GOSHAWK II" BREATHER AND OIL FILLER. MR. ROYCE has made a proposal which he thinks might also be schemed for the 40/50 H.P. chassis to overcome the trouble of the engine fumes getting into closed bodies. It consists of a tube made of an aluminium die casting fixed to the side of the crankcase, and having internal baffle plates cast in it with a centrally inserted tube of smaller diameter for feeding fresh oil into the engine. This tube limits the rate at which oil can be filled, and conveys the oil safely past an upper connection on the tower which serves as the escape for the engine gases. A pipe from this upper connection is conveyed to the outside of the engine housing, passing through the undershield in the case of "Goshawk II" and through the guard plates between the engine and frame. in the case of the 40/50 chassis, from whence it should be carried away in the draught underneath the car. The dimensions given in the sketch are those that are being applied for the "Goshawk II" at West WitteringHenry Royce's home town.
