With reference to the new designs of Magneto Drives:- (1) The fabric Coupling. (2) The serrated type of drive. We believe the question of some provision for a brake drum has been raised with you previously and you instructed us to omit any provision for the fitting of the brake. From the tests Mr. Hives has made, he finds that firstly some engines could not be made quiet without the brake, and secondly that it is not only a question of slack in Magneto Coupling but in the pinion driving the Magneto. We feel that it is very difficult to be sure that the old trouble which caused us to fit the brake is definitely cured and will never recur to production chassis, merely by testing one or two experimental cars, and we suggest that it is desirable for some provision to be made in the design so that the brake can be fitted at any time if this is found to be necessary.
