June 1928. Mr. Coley, ROYCE LTD. MANCHESTER. Dear Mr. Coley, As far as we can extract from the figures supplied by Mr. Kenyon, the losses in the current year of working can be partly traced to want of economy by the excessive use of overtime. My impression is that neither overtime or nightwork pays, except as an emergency, because with overtime the men are tired, and with nightwork the value for the money spent is bad due to the inefficient supervision etc, cost of production being high, quality of work done bad, and excessive cost of light and power. I shall therefore be glad if you will at once increase the number of hands employed, and ask the Works Manager to let us know what lack of machine tools (if any) causes the use of so much overtime.
