ORIGINAL R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Ha/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} C.c. Mr. Mor. C.c. Mr. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} C.c. Mr. Hdy.{William Hardy} Ha/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}7/KT.14.10.32. X4027 PEREGRINE BRAKES. We have carried out tests to determine the efficiency of the various parts of the Peregrine brake linkage, similar to the tests on P.II. described in Ha/Ra.1/LG.12.1.29. In these tests loads up to 200 lbs. were applied to the brake pedal, or the equivalent load on the servo 'T' arm, and the torque at one rear and front brace was measured. The losses therefore include those due to bearing friction in each cross shaft, and also those due to the differentials in the equalisers. These latter on the first chassis are very inefficient and we shall see whether attention to manufacturing details will improve them. Although the direct braking efficiency is only shown as .68, this would be very much higher under road conditions when, due to the brakes being correctly adjusted, there is no movement of the equaliser gears with the consequent lost effort.
