EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} took our experimental car for a 200 mile run last week-end. He did all he could to make it load up or miss-fire, but could not make it do so.
We have just had one test with the hot spot throttle made to the LeC.drawing. So far we have not been able to equal the results we obtained with our experimental one because of there not being sufficient heat. Also the characteristic of the throttle is altered, and the distribution when cold, is bad. This, of course, is not so serious when we have the Dorris scheme on. Quite unofficially, my advice to you people would be to put in hand a throttle with heating all round as shown on the design which I sent you that was got out at Derby. We think that design would be still further improved if the heating jacket was extended farther up the pipe and not made so that the nut can be screwed right back. For this particular feature you should follow the LeC. drawing. We shall eventually, no doubt, get the LeC. design scheme to work equally as well as our experimental set but it will take time. We think it is such a great pity to be so stingy with the heat, especially, when by the use of the butterfly valve in the exhaust pipe, one can get an adjustment. I quite appreciate the seriousness of the position but we are perfectly helpless to do more than we are doing at present. All we can say is that we are confident you will overcome:-
1. Loading up and missing fire.
2. Crankcase dilution.
