X.3887. - RE SUGGESTED ALTERATION TO POSITION OF HAND AND BRAKE LEVERS SIDEWAYS TO SUIT STREAMLINE BODYWORK. X.3462

In reply to your memo Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}9/CB22.1.20 in which you put forward the suggestion to Mr. Royce made by London that the gear lever should be set inwards and the brake lever also altered so as to allow of the use of a less bulbous/scuttle dash with inside levers, would you kindly note that Mr. Royce replies to the following effect:-

The positions of levers shewn in figsl 1 and 2, N. scheme 220 as suggested by London are preferred to the more bent position given in fig. 3. Mr. Royce says that he understands that both of the levers have been shortened from the old original lengths, and that the right thing to do first for obtaining a better scuttle is to shorten the levers. He certainly agrees that the brake lever should be perfectly straight as in fig. 1.

Mr. Royce would like you to get a set of levers made up on a chassis to the approved position, and obtain the opinion of EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and HM.{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs} on them.

With regard to the set to be put in the gear lever, the bend cannot be made to start at the top of the gate on account of the necessity of keeping the lower portion of the reverse guard square. This makes a bad job of the set gear lever, as the bend must occur high up. Chassis 1.EX is very bad in this respect, and Mr. Royce says we must not destroy the car for the sake of streamline bodies.
