D.R. 988 (ST) (4919/24/8/39) C.E. Spare Copy. Dickinson pump report. EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT REPORT. REFERENCE:— Lov{Mr Lovesey}/AT/JB.4/GR.{George Ratcliffe}28.10.40. Subject of Report:— Performance Tests on the Fluid Transfer Fuel Pump (Diekinson's). General Conclusion:— Tests have been carried out on a fuel pump supplied by Messrs Fluid Transfer Ltd., to investigate the advantages claimed for this type of pump, which incorporates a patent bye-pass valve, as compared with existing RR types. The following points should be noted:- 1. The pump tested is inherently simple in design and would be easy to manufacture, and also has a performance slightly better than that of the standard Merlin. 2. This improvement in performance on a single pump which might not be representative of a Production series is insufficient to warrant consideration being given to a changeover to this pump. 3. The patent bye-pass valve has no influence on the performance of the pump and would appear only to be operative when feeding an extremely long delivery pipe such as is not the case on fuel systems. 4. The indications are that modifications may have to be made to the material of the oscillating disc since this (in aluminium alloy) showed signs of pick-up on the outer casing (also in aluminium alloy). The finish of both the bye-pass valve and the relief valve was unsatisfactory.
