Continue with distribution tests as per previous memo 8/MH.{M. Huckerby}17.11.37. Up to date results indicate that with baffles to stop swirl in the side of the hot box, the new 30 H.P. shape of induction pipe makes distribution good. Try and push for modified pipe to go to France for 15,000 miles. WRAITH III NO.8 UNIT. After finalling off No.7 unit for return to shop for modification prior to 15,000 miles fit above unit on the bed. This is a new unit incorporating all modifications found necessary on No.7. Following running in, the timing gears to be quietened. Check for rattle at low speeds (end float of camshaft). It is possible that rattle will be present as experienced on No. 7 Unit. Fit the plunger end load scheme which is at present being drawn and check if rattle is cured. Try various strength of springs. When cured remove cam balance tappets and check if any rattles or periods of thrash "come up". Correct piston rings should be available by when the gear job is cleared up and should then be fitted. Run a 1 hour oil consumption and repeat. | ||
