The distributor is run up to a high speed and then slowed down until the lowest speed at which the full governor advance is indicated by the disc is found. Then calling this reading 9 1/2° the advance speed characteristic of the governor is found, working downwards. This should lie within the following limits :-

Advance. Speeds.
MINm. MAX.
9 1/2° 1100 1280
6 1/2° 925 1015
3 1/2° 695 815
1/2° 480 655

It is best to start the test with the hand advance fully retarded, taking care that it remains so, in order not to interfere with the governor readings.

If the speed limits are not complied with, it will generally be found that the only alteration required is that of the set of the spring in the undeflected position of the weights. This set may require slightly weakening if the speed for 1/2° advance lies above the maximum limit.
