'V' SERIES CONTROLS.

I was rather surprised to receive your memo. BY4/H16.4.25., as I have been over the matters raised on these controls with Mr. Shelton and agreed to the modifications proposed. I therefore imagined that the question was settled. The points in the order you have named them are as follows :-

(1) BALL JOINTS FOULING STEERING COLUMN NUTS. This is due to the fact that the nuts have been made larger since the original scheme was got out. We agree to increasing the lever centre from 1" to 1¼" with a corresponding increase on the lever on the inclined shaft.

(2) MIXTURE CONTROL BALL JOINT ON THE CROSS SHAFT FOULING THROTTLE BALL JOINT AND PULL ROD FROM STEERING COLUMN.
By an accumulation of differences the Derby scheme fouls where the LeC.scheme clears, the latter shewing the balls .150 further apart. There seems to be some difference in the question of the position of the steering box. We agree to shortening the mixture lever from 1¼" to 1" as proposed and decreasing the lever on the other side of the crankcase from 1.575 to 1.250 using an existing lever.

(3) THROTTLE BALL JOINT FOULING CLAMPING BOLT ON MIXTURE LEVER.
We did not indicate on our scheme the position of the clamping bolt but Derby fitted an existing lever. We think a new lever should be made with clamping bolt bosses in a suitable position.

(4) ACCELERATOR COUNTERSHAFT PULL ROD FOULING MAIN OIL PIPE.
We agree to changing this rod end for end which is a simple alteration requiring no new parts.

(5) BALL JOINT OF THE THROTTLE LEVER FOULING CLAMPING BOLT OF IGNITION LEVER.
Here again a clamping bolt position was required to be worked out at a suitable angle. We have suggested the position shewn on scheme 637. This would be cleared up in one move with point (1).

(6) NECK OF BALL END OF MIXTURE LEVER FOULING SLOT IN BALL JOINT BODY.
This does not occur on the LeC.scheme because the control rod is normal with the lever. Here again you differ from us with regard to the position of the steering box or the distance of the ball end from the steering box centre. This point is cleared up by the adoption of suggestion in (2).

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
