WATERS A.{Mr Adams} J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} WOOLCOTT OUR REF FB/EHF. 1st December, 1938. W. A.{Mr Adams} Robotham, Esq., Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., Derby. Dear Mr. Robotham, On Monday of this week I had occasion to call on Nuffield Mechanizations, Birmingham, in connection with pistons we are making for the Liberty type engine being used in tanks. We have also received a set of blue prints for AC.9 bearings for this engine, and to say the least of it, they are very interested indeed in AC.9 There is, however, one point on which they would like some assurance, and that is regarding the connecting rod bearings. These are of the type similar to the set which you showed me when at your Works recently, for use with 'forked' end type connecting rod, and I am enclosing blue prints of the existing bearing, as I understand that one rod clamps the two halves of the bearings together and the other rod runs between the forks of this clamp-type rod on the outer diameter in the centre of the bearing on the external periphery. Would it be possible for you to send one of your forked type rods, which is similar to this job, so that Mr. Luyks, the Designer at Nuffield Mechanization, could have the opportunity of seeing what has been done already with this type of bearing. If you could do this, and would send it direct to Mr. Luyks we feel this would be very helpful indeed, as I have already taken the liberty of mentioning that you have done a considerable amount of experimental work with this type of bearing, with forked big ends, and that I had seen examples of it when at Rolls. | ||
