Re. - 58-CN.{Mr Chamberain}

With regard to my visit to Cricklewood on January 17th., last, to attend to carburetter and sticking valves on the above car, I found that the Stromberg slow running lever had been broken by Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}'s driver when cleaning down the engine, and the adjustment upset. I fitted a new lever and reset the carburetter correctly.

The exhaust valves were undoubtedly sticking badly, and upon dismantling the cylinder head and removing the valves, I found that there was a scaly carbon deposit on the base of the valve stems and that all of them had picked up slightly for a distance of ½" to 1" from the base of the stem, Nos. 7 and 11 valves being the worst. I cleaned up the valve stems and guides and removed all the picking up marks and carbon deposit with a piece of very fine emery cloth and the valves became perfectly free again. The inlet valves were in good condition no sticking being in evidence.
I then had the cylinder head and piston tops de-carbonized, all valve seats re-cut and valve faces skimmed up on a machine, (the seats were rather badly pitted) and the valves ground in. After checking the bedding of the faces and seats with bedding blue and examining grummitts, valve springs and valve spring washers, I re-erected same and re-fitted cylinder head to engine. I tested the car on the road over a distance of approx. 40 miles, taking Mr. Messervey along with me, and was quite satisfied that the valves were perfectly free, and the carburation and slow running was OK.

Mr. Bellringer telephoned Conduit St.{Capt. P. R. Strong}, to find out whether Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} wished to see me before I returned to Derby, but his secretary informed us that he was away for the afternoon, and so I came away.

G.H.Whyman.
