Recurring failure of a spare wheel carrier and proposing potential solutions.

Bailey - Chief Engineer} ORIGINAL Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rml/LG4.10.27. SPARE WHEEL CARRIER. 48600 We are sending to you a broken carrier plate which was fitted up with clips to N.sch.2441. This failed after 5 hrs. on the bump. It will be recollected that this is the fourth unsuccessful attempt to hold the spare wheel off the bottom cross tube only. The vibration of the wheel is such that we feel convinced it will be very difficult to make the plate and clips stand up if they are held at the bottom only. We have proved, however, that if the central cross tube of the luggage carrier guard is utilised to hold the top of the plate the result is satisfactory. The only reason why this fixing cannot be utilised as far as we know is a difference of opinion as to whether this portion of the luggage carrier should be supplied without extra cost to the customer. We wonder whether sufficient people do purchase the car without a luggage grid, to make the further postponement of the spare wheel at the back, with its consequent benefit to riding qualities, worth while.
