January 13th. 1915. RE EASY STARTING. I am sending to Mr Royce a priming arrangement, it is the one we have obtained such good results from. The reason I am sending this is because I should like Mr Royce to try for himself one or two points with regard to it. The mixture delivered into the induction pipe with this arrangement is always in the form of spray. Mr Royce in his note suggested that it would first deliver petrol and then air. Why this does not happen is that owing to the bends in the pipe and the surface friction the air from the hand pump blows through the petrol and carries a certain amount with it, it takes two or three strokes of the hand pump to umpty the U tube of petrol. The more the passage is restricted the finer the spray and the less quantity of petrol to air. The most important thing I should like Mr Royce to confirm, that on our tests I have found that it is not necessary neither is it desirable to have too fine a spray for easy starting. With the syringe which everyone agrees is most successful that does not produce | ||
