To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} From He/GM. c. to R.{Sir Henry Royce} S. c. to Mor. Sy. c. to Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} 87360 He/GM.7/KT.1.4.31. X.7360. X.5360. RE. SQUEAKING BRAKES. We have tried out the suggestion you sent us in your memo. E.1/M21.3.31., and have not obtained any satisfactory results. I tried the scheme out on one car at Cricklewood whilst I was there, and instead of curing the squeaks it produced a squeak of a higher note and more volume, consequently we had to abandon the test on that car. We are going to repeat the test with a new set of brake linings, etc on one of our expl. cars and shall see whether we obtain any better results before we can say definitely if there is anything in the idea of tapering the front of the shoes off.
