Mr. Claude Johnson,
Rolls-Royce, Ltd.,
London, England.

For the attention of Mr. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives.

Dear Sir:

Re Road Spring Bumping Tests

We should appreciate receiving a short note from Mr. Hives as to the relation between the life of road springs on the bumping test and the observed fracture of the springs.

We have been attempting to ascertain the differences in the spring which cause the observed variations in the life of the spring.

Our observations lead us to believe that plates on which the surfaces have been decarburised and plates which exhibit a crystalline fracture when rebroken have a shorter life than plates which are non-crystalline or which are free from decarburisation.

We should be glad to know whether the bumping test results agree with our observations or whether they point to some entirely different feature as being the principal factor in the variation of spring life.

Might we also receive the latest Derby specification on steel for road springs.

Yours very truly,

Maurice Olley
