V4244 RV [redacted] c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}11/H.S.2.24. re. 20-HP Slipper Drive Seizing Up. Further to our memos re 20-HP complaints, Point No. 49, we still continue to receive complaints of engines developing bad rattles which are found to be due to the seizing up of the slipper drive. This appears still to be taking place even though we are fixing the latest type small diameter washers, although we admit we do not appear to have such large quantities of these failures as were having some time ago. It is essential, however, that we should as soon as ever possible alter the present material to the new type material, which Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} is now recommending for standardising. We shall be glad if Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} will arrange for the standardisation of this material to be pushed, andwe shall be glad if you will arrange for the existing material to be replaced as soon as the new material is obtained, also if you will give instructions for new washers to be supplied to us so that we can make use of them, and send some to our Depots with instructions to make use of this material in case of any trouble which is caused by the existing fibre washers. We have had one or two cases where the trouble has developed three or four times, and the customers are getting somewhat aggravated and annoyed, and we are anxious to assure them that the job will now remain good, which we cannot do at present.
