EXPERIMENTAL DEPARTMENT.

Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.10/JH. 14th. December, 1938.

The Goodyear Tyre & Rubber Co.Ltd.,
WOLVERHAMPTON.

For the attention of Mr. K.E. Barton.

Dear Sirs,

We are today returning to you the two sample fan belts No.N.8620B which you sent us and which have been tested under conditions which we specified to you, i.e. driving our Phantom III Fan at max. speed. After 2 1/2 hours the first belt (labelled) failed, the symptoms being excessive stretch and slip - belt was sectioned and it will be seen that the cards have failed - it will also be seen from the section that the cards are badly placed in the belt. After 7 1/2 hrs. the other belt failed and again failure of the cards is seen to be the cause of failure.

Our tests therefore indicate that the belts which you are manufacturing are inferior to the belts which we are at present using, and which will exceed 25 hours running satisfactorily on above test.

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.
