Dear Tom,

We are studying the oil filter problem on an engine of 27 litres displacement.

The requirements are that the oil shall be kept clean, since the engine works under conditions where it is probable that dirt will either be inserted with the oil or will get into the crankcase through the breather. The less attention the filter requires, the better.

We note that on the Meadows 16½ litre engine, you have fitted two enormous by-pass filters, but frankly we have not room for them on this installation.

We enclose Drawing No: DES.220, which shows a centrifugal filter which was designed for an aviation engine a long time ago.

We should like your opinion as to whether such a filter would do what we want. If you think the prospects are promising, are you in a position to make up a sample for test and, if so, can you give us some indication as to what the cost of such a sample would be?

Detail drawings are actually available and we can let you have these if you consider the project is worthwhile. Alternatively, you might be able to rig up the essential features of the filter very cheaply and make a test without involving any considerable outlay.

Yours sincerely,
