Oy5 - G 25321 March 25, 1921 Mr. Claude Johnson, Managing Director, Rolls-Royce Ltd., London, England. Attention: Messrs. F.H. Royce and Hives. Dear Sir:- X.4285. Re: American Bosch Battery Ignition X.3513 With reference to my letter of March 4th addressed to the attention of Messrs. Royce & Hives, I therein stated that the rubbing contact of the Bosch contact breaker was a Bakelite and silk composition. I was misinformed in this and find now that the contact is actually a Bakelite and linen composition, a sample sheet of which is enclosed here-with. I am informed that Bakelite before heating has a solvent action on silk which among other things, prevents its use as a varnish for coils wound with silk covered wire. It has also a solvent action on the enamels used for covering wire and therefore cannot be used as an impregnating varnish for coils wound with enamel wire. Bakelite washers, however, may be used in coils having enamelled or silk covered wire, since after the molding operation the Bakelite is an entirely inert compound.
