Phantom III & 25 HP. Steering.

We visited the Adamant Engineering Co. yesterday and discussed the various troubles we are having with our steering.

In the case of our difficulty of being unable to take up all the backlash, they admit that their cams and rollers may be on the small side. Apparently, owing to the relatively small number of cams which they supply to us, they have not made their usual inspecting jigs. They are going to rectify this and will make every effort to keep within the drawing limits.

In order to assist them in this matter they want us to loan to them a steering box which they will retain so that they can check the setting up of their machine before starting on a batch of cams. Will you please send them a box for this purpose. It is, of course, essential that all the parts of this box should be the most accurate that we can supply. They will require to use the box for both Ph.III and 25 HP. cams.

The box should be a standard 25 HP. type except for the following features :-

(1) No cam, inner steering tube, or outer steering column should be fitted.

(2) The box should be bored to suit a pair of Timken cam bearings and the bearings should be sent with the box.

(3) A pair of Adamant type cam bearings should be ground down to the same size as the Timken bearings so that Ph.III type cams can be assembled in the box.

(4) The box should have a standard 25 HP. rockershaft completely assembled with roller follower.

(5) There should be sent out with the box a rockershaft complete with roller to suit Ph.III cams and which will be interchangeable with the 25 HP. shaft. This will necessitate an old type Ph.III rockershaft to F.87388. We have several of these shafts in the experimental dept. and we will hand them over to you so that you can select the most accurate one.
