Dear Howlett,

Mr. Hives has passed on to me an extract from your letter to Devereux of the 7th. June.

In it you say that Pilkington and young Henry had told you that I said R.R. had dropped A.C.9. You also mentioned in your letter that this is a "stab in the back" for a product which you are handling.

I take very strong exception to these statements since they are not in accordance with the facts.

I attach copies of letters from Henry Spurrier and Pilkington which speak for themselves.

So far from stabbing you in the back, after your visit to Derby the other day, I went out of my way to go up to Leylands in Lancashire to see what their trouble was.

As a result of my visit I wrote Pilkington a letter on the 10th, a copy of which I also attach. This was written three or four days before I knew anything of your letter to Devereux, which was not passed on to me until several days later.

Since R.R. seem to be under a continuous barrage for their alleged lack of enthusiasm for A.C.9. bearing material, I think you should know our opinion of the way in which the job is being handled.

Personally, I think that the engineering which has been put into the selling of this material has been quite inadequate for a product of this nature.
