X.3055 - Re Inverted Engine, X.3098 With reference to the proposed inverted engine, we think that the best position for the exhaust valve is at the bottom, so that in the case of an inverted 12 cylinder vee all the exhausts look inward. In this position, any oil that tends to accumulate in the cylinder is blown out of the exhaust valve. The inlets, carburettors, and ignition plugs would be on the outside of the vee. We propose to put the ignition plugs in the side position. For cylinders of separate steel construction as used now, the plugs would probably look as shown on Figure 1.
