re. 20-HP. Axle Failure. Chassis 85-K-7.

The above chassis was returned to us recently with a complaint that the axle had developed noisy.

On testing it was manifest that there was something wrong on the "forward" side, and the axle was returned to the Works for investigation.

We understand from Mr. Shaw that a full report has been submitted to SFT{Mr Swift} about this matter which is to the effect that the thrust bearing failed on the "forward" drive.

Roughly, the car has been used in service by the customer for about 6,000 miles.

We had a short time ago a similar case where the thrust bearing had failed on the reverse side. This, however, was with an axle which we had used on test for general road and dynamometer testing.

Probably you may consider this a feature which require investigation, and I shall certainly be glad to have your report as to whether you think anything further should be done over and above what we are now doing, and whether you think there is the possibility of similar failures taking place in service.
