L7060 Instructions for setting Silent Tappets. Tools Required. 1. An instrument, with a hook end, which can be inserted in the hole in the plunger caps for opening the plunger valves. 2. A distance piece 1/16" deep for setting the tappets. Timing the Engine. Probably the best way to do this is to remove the return springs from under the plungers of the cylinder being turned so that the plungers drop to the bottom of the casings. Time in the usual way with .020" tappet clearance making sure that the pad of the eccentric rocker is hard against the cap of the plunger. Setting the Tappets. Turn the engine until the valve is fully seated. Hold the plunger valve open. Insert the distance piece between the plunger cap and the pad of the eccentric rocker. Depress the eccentric rocker until the plunger return spring is choc-a-bloc and take up clearance with the adjusting screw on the valve rocker until the push rod is just free. To put the Tappets in operation. Run the engine slowly. When it is seen that oil is reaching the tappets, open the plunger valve and depress the plunger. Allow a few moments for the oil to build up and then release the plunger. If it still bobs up and down, repeat until it is steady under slow running conditions. N.B. 1. The greatest care should be taken to ensure that no dirt gets into the hydraulic units. 2. The plunger and eccentric rocker should bob up and down freely if the plunger valve is opened whilst the engine is running. | ||
