Messrs. Rudge-Whitworth Ltd.,
Coventry.

For the attention of Mr. Hack.

Dear Sirs,

We are anxious to lighten the wheel hubs of our Bentley chassis. We send you herewith a sketch of the manner in which we intend to save 2¼ lbs. on each front hub. You will see that owing to the existing diameter of the outer ball bearing, which cannot be altered without alterations to the stub axle, we have cut away part of the driving splines. We should be glad to have your views on this procedure, and whether you consider the amount of spline left is sufficient for the front brake torque.

Are we correct in believing that nearly the whole of the driving or braking torque is taken on the cone and not on the splines ?

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
