Dear Sir,

We are giving consideration to the slide valve engine you brought to our notice on Friday last.

In the meantime we estimate that for the maximum inlet valve area to be 1/4 of the piston area, using an opening duration of 210°, a valve stroke of about 2¼" will be necessary on a 3¼" bore engine. This seems rather a large stroke to cope with, and we should like your confirmation of the figure and to know on what general lines you would design the operating mechanism, using one 1/2 speed crankshaft only.

We return to you herewith the curves you were good enough to leave with us, and also, under separate cover, the model pieces. We are retaining the descriptive folder as you have agreed to our doing so.

Yours faithfully,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.
