the case which encloses it through the inspection hole on top.

Gear Box. The gear is built on to the back of the clutch casing the whole being fixed rigidly to the engine, making a complete rigid unit. It has three speeds and a reverse and is arranged on similar lines to our own 4 speed box, with the exception that the side shaft is not at the side of the main shaft, as in our own box, but is directly below the main shaft. Such gears as can be seen through the inspection hole are of similar appearance and proportions to our own. Good sized splined shafts are used for the sliding gears to run on.

Tyre Pump. On the near side of the box an air pump is fixed which can be clutched in or out as desired for the purpose of inflating the tyres, the coupling for the air pipe and the clutch control knob being fitted outside the frame.

Change Gear Lever. The gears are operated by the left hand in a similar manner to the "Gate change". There is, however, no "gate" or indicator to tell which gear is in, but this is not inconvenient as one soon knows the positions. The gears are reasonably easy to change and are fairly good as regards silent running, but are no better than we generally produce ourselves.

Rear Axle. The rear axle casing is built up to two steel pressings which are welded together along a horizontal seam, as shewn in sketch No.4. The rear wheels are fixed to the axle shaft on tapers fitted with keys; the weight being carried therefore on the revolving shaft and not on the stationary tube, which is the better practice.

Gleason single helical bevels are used, the ratio being 62 - 15 teeth. The pitch is about 5 S and the width of (contd)
