- 3 - C Ring nut for retaining air valve cap has worked loose on two occasions. Fan bracket, fan & fan belt. These are in good condition. We have not had any vibrations from fan, and experienced no trouble with fan belt. Slipper & spring drive to Sch. 638. These have functioned O.K., and are in good condition from an outside examination. Dynamo. X8680 This has functioned O.K. since our last report. Oil pump. We have had no trouble with this whatsoever. It still gives ample oil supply. Oil relief valve unit. We still think that this is in an inaccessible position. It has functioned O.K. Battery ignition. X8680 X8652 The points have now run 13,339 miles, since cleaning the condensor connections, and making all connections O.K. They are still making good contact, and have not deteriorated since our last report. We have had no trouble with battery ignition. It has functioned O.K. Oil relay for ignition system. We have dismantled this and examined piston. The leather washer is still in a very good-condition. The mileage of car since this was fitted is 20,624. The filter of this unit was taken out, and a fair amount of dirt had accumulated. This has been cleaned and refitted. Connecting rods. We have had further trouble with these. No. 3 conrod had seized, and the metal run out of bearing. No.5 conrod - the white metal was cracked. No. 6 conrod was badly scored. Nos. 2, 4 & 1 conrods - slight cracks in metal. We have fitted a new set of conrods, special care being taken in the tinning, to prevent white metal from breaking away. Before fitting conrods, we took the oil caps off crank journals. We found the bore of the journals were quite three quarters made up with soft carbon. It would be interesting to note the difference in amount of deposit in these journals by using different engine oils on these 10,000 miles tests. Bonnet & fittings. Portion of top centre hinge broken. Bonnet fabric has so worn that bonnet fasteners will not hold bonnet down. It has been necessary for safety to fit a strap over the bonnet for high speed work. Bonnet locks have worn, and will not stay locked. | ||
