To BJ. from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to WGR. c. to C. c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} X8350 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/LG28.11.27. AXLE RATIOS. With reference to BJ16/E25.11.27. It would appear that it is for Sales to state on which car they would like the 14-tooth axle fitted. We attach a copy of a note from R.{Sir Henry Royce} from which it will be seen that he has no objection. As the roads become more crowded, it naturally follows that the big cars require better acceleration, if they are to safely pass other cars on the road. As regards the disadvantage of the 14-tooth axle. If we run the engine faster, which will occur with the 14-tooth axle, we must expect slightly more fuss and noise, but we should say in the case of the heavy cars this would not be noticeable. We propose therefore to send round a standard-isation sheet for the 14-tooth axle for Phantom cars. We understand Sales have already run Phantom cars fitted with the 14-tooth axles, therefore they should be in a position to judge whether they give satisfactory results.
