32-EX. PHANTOM III.

ENGINE MOUNTINGS.

Excessive engine movement was indicated by fouls at various points. The rubber mountings on the front engine feet were therefore dismantled and it was found that the rubber no longer adhered to the centre steel insert and was allowing excessive movement to take place.

Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} tells us that he has found this previously on the bump and on several of our cars.

BONNET SIDE STRIPS.

It was found that the aluminium bracket by which the rear end of the bonnet side strip is attached to the frame was broken. This bracket takes the whole pull of the rear bonnet catch, and the relative movements of the bonnet and scuttle are transmitted to it. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Les.{Ivan A. Leslie} breaks these on the bump and has fitted replacements in steel which have given no trouble. Steel brackets are required for all chassis.

ALUMINIUM FRONT SPRING BOXES.

When removing the bijur coils from the top suspension lever bearings, three of the four studs holding the stiffening bracket screwed out of the aluminium, allowing the damper oil to escape. This point requires attention.

STEERING PIVOTS.

A bad knock occurs when the car is bounced on the springs, and appears to come from the lower pivot bearing on the near side. This will require full investigation work when the car returns and alternative axle parts are available for comparative tests.
