Dynamo:- Lucas E.5754 No.402.
Cut-out:- New Exol. S.E. with main fuse.

Condition. Volts. Amperes. Speed. Corresponding approx. dynamo balancing speed.

1. 18.5 --
Cold. 2. 13.0 +3.5 750 600
3. 12.7 0
4. 12.5 -- 650 --

1. 18.2 --
Hot. 2. 14.2 +3.6 880 740
3. 13.9 0
4. 13.9 -- 720 --

Examination of the above results will show that for Lucas cut-outs A and B in the cold condition, these cut in if anything slightly early and allow of reverse current just at the moment. Therefore, any tendency to buzz at this point was counteracted by holding the contact on with the finger. Cut-out C, on the other hand, on the dynamo test is operated unduly late, for instance 750 R.P.M. instead of 600 R.P.M. The two Smith cut-outs operate cold at approximately the correct speeds having been set to dothis.

Now considering the hot condition it will be seen that for Lucas A and B, which operate approximately correctly cold, there is, when the whole combination is hot, considerable delay in the operation of the cut-out as compared
