Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer}4/MH.{M. Huckerby}25.3.38. BENTLEY II REAR AXLE BEARING RIG TESTS. We wish to carry out some rig tests on a Bentley axle pinion bearing in an attempt to reproduce cage failures. We have handed to the shop an axle casing with a pinion fitted to it. Will you please do the following work to this casing. (1) Fit plugs to all holes to make oiltight. (2) Fit any available pinion Bearing which is undamaged. (3) Fit covers G.100832 and GB.584. (4) Fit two packing washers GB.613/8, one of which should be 0.004 out of parallel and the other parallel and of a thickness to give 0.005 average preload. The bearing should be tested by filling casing to centre line of pinion with Wakefield's Hi-Press oil and running pinion at 100 r.p.m. After 1 hour examine bearing for cage failure.
