and supposed that this had naturally been done, until I heard from HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and WOR. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} on Friday that the springs had not been instructed.

The dates are -

25th May - report from Woodhead on the original experimental springs. As soon after this as the calculations (taking into account the tapered ends) had been completed, two more experimental springs were ordered to the new method, but I have not the exact date.

16th August - These two new experimental springs received from Woodheads.

18th August (received 20th August) Mr. Stott reported their receipt, had measured them up, and told me the favourable result mentioned above.

22nd August - I instructed Mr. Stott to issue the remaining springs (already calculated on our method, and waiting to be instructed) to BY's Dept. for ordering.

9th September - WOR. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} and HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} reported that there had been no springs ordered owing to a dispute with Mr. Stott, which had not been reported to me.

So it will perhaps be agreed that except for the period between the 22nd August and the 9th September, about which I was in ignorance, there has not been much delay, as it would not have been wise to order a large number of springs until the receipt of the experimental springs had verified the method by which they should be calculated.

We have, during this past week end, prepared a fresh set of spring drawings calculated on the simplest method, and throwing considerable responsibility on Woodheads; but it will perhaps be agreed that as the more accurate figures prepared by Stott are (I understood from WOR. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} and HS. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} ) in BY's hands now
