EFC. AC.4. 6th March 1924. X.3513 - REDMANOL VARNISH. A sample of this varnish, made by dissolving a supplied powder in alcohol, which was received from Mr. Brock several months ago, has now been submitted to some tests as follows :- Some pieces of tin-foil 2" x 2.75" were covered for the tests. Time to dry. 10 to 15 minutes. Coating. Thickness of one coat .0005". The varnish flakes off if scraped fairly hard with a knife. Elasticity. The varnish cracked very locally when the foil was bent double each way two or three times. Heating. Placed on a heated metal plate, the varnish became sticky at 100°C. Above this it turned a deep yellow which was permanent on cooling. Absorption. A sample was weighed, soaked in water for 100 hours and re-weighed. The increase in weight (of the varnish alone) was 24.5%. The varnish was left permanently lighter in colour. Solidity. The varnish was not visibly affected by 48 hours immersion in engine-oil, or by 24 in petrol. Chemical stabalite. Pinks stains were made by drops of strong sulphuric acid and brown stains by nitric acid, when left for some minutes, but no violent actions occurred. Inflammability. A small amount of the varnish in the liquid state burns characteristically of alcohol without igniting other constituents; these burn with a mild yellow flame when held in a gas flame. EFC/FJA. | ||
