10th. March 1938.

Messrs. Hallam, Sleigh & Cheston Ltd.,
Widney Works,
Bagot Street,
BIRMINGHAM, 4.

For the attention of Mr.Booth.

Dear Sirs,

Referring to our telephone conversation of to-day about the proposed manufacture by yourselves of a sample Bentley Bonnet, we now find that it is unlikely that we shall go into production with the type of bonnet for which we have sent you drawings, as we are considering using the type with detachable side plates and hinged top plates only. We think it advisable therefore, not to proceed any further with the bonnet which we discussed, and regret any trouble to which you have been put. We shall, however, welcome your offer to make us a sample bonnet when the details for the new type bonnet are complete. We will get in touch with you as soon as this state is reached. If you make us such a bonnet, it will be desirable for the top plates, after having the edge folded for your Widney hinge, and being shaped approximately to the drawing, to be forwarded to us to be fitted to the actual body on the chassis in question before being returned to you for folding of side hinge edge and completion of bonnet.

This will avoid trouble due to discrepancies of the body which will be the first experimental one and therefore not necessarily correct to drawing.

We would like to know whether you market any bonnet fasteners of the type which is used with the proposed type of bonnet (Messrs. Rover's fastener is one example) i.e. which pull the top plate down on to the side one. If so we would like to have particulars of same.

Yours faithfully,

for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.
