X. FROM E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} CHP ORIGINAL C. to X. R.{Sir Henry Royce} X. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X. RECEIVED NOV 18 E1/M16.11.31. VG31. X4433. COMMERCIAL MOTOR TRANSPORT EXHIBITION. (CONTINUED FROM - E1/M14.11.31.) 4 STROKE COMP. IGNITION ENGINES. (contd.) The Deutz engine used on the Berna chassis has a flat faced sprayer valve which appears to build up into a more simple construction than the Bosch sprayer. This engine is a 6 cyl. and has the gears at the rear end enclosed by an ordinary wheelcase, the change gearbox being a separate unit. The crankshaft pinion is overhung from the rear main bearing and the flywheel is carried on a taper no larger than the normal dia. of the shaft. If this is all that is necessary it makes a very simple scheme for a chassis in which the change gearbox is separate. A substantial damper flywheel is fitted. The Saurer C. I. engine is somewhat unique in having the cyl. block and whole of the crankcase cast in one piece, the crankshaft being threaded in endways. The last named component is built up of seven pieces bolted together, and runs in large dia. roller bearings. The cyl. bores are fitted with thin dry liners centrifugally cast. These liners apparently maintain themselves in position without flanges. Similar liners are fitted to the Thornycroft petrol engine. The use of hardened cyl. liners was claimed on the Gardner range of 4, 5, and 6. cyl. comp. ignition engines, but as these people had not a Stand of their own no further information about these liners was available.
